Ballpoint pens that broke

There is often a ballpoint pen nearby. On a meeting table. In a drawer. At the bottom of a bag. Most of them are made of plastic, bamboo, or cardboard. And most of them end up in the same place.

According to estimates, about 9 billion ballpoint pens are thrown away each year. They break. The spring pops out. The clip comes off. The ink runs out long before the rest of the pen. The ballpoint pen has become a consumable item that we expect to be able to replace without much thought  .

It's a strange fate for a tool that was once a technical invention.

An everyday object without value

The ballpoint pen is one of the most used writing instruments in the world, but also one of the ones we treat most carelessly. It's given away for free. Borrowed without being returned. Thrown away without a second thought.

In the material behind this article, precisely that logic is described as the problem: that something we use to capture thoughts, ideas, and decisions has been reduced to something temporary. Something that isn't meant to last – neither physically nor mentally  .

Less, but better

"It doesn't have to be like this."

This sentence recurs in the narrative. Not as a promise, but as a statement. Because the point is not that the world needs more ballpoint pens. The point is that the world might need fewer – and better.

What we surround ourselves with should be something we actually enjoy using. Not because it's exclusive, but because it works. Because it lasts. Because it's well thought out  .

The story doesn't end with the first idea. It takes a detour.

The first version was beautiful but didn't write well enough. And that was the turning point. Because if a ballpoint pen doesn't write properly, the rest is meaningless. So the process started over. Back to the drawing board. For adjustments, tests, and improvements.

The result was not presented as revolutionary. Rather as a correction. A 2.0 version. A ballpoint pen that not only looks good but also does what it's supposed to: write – stably, comfortably, and for a long time  .

A different relationship with things

This article is actually less about ballpoint pens and more about the relationship with the things we use every day. When something is made to last, it also changes the way we use it. We take better care of it. We lose it less often. And we don't replace it without reason.

It's not a rebellion against progress or technology. It's a reminder that even the smallest objects deserve consideration.

Because even a ballpoint pen leaves its mark.
